From the President
Rising to
the Challenge
THE YEAR HAS BROUGHT its share of challenges,
from economic uncertainties to environmental concerns,
impacting equine owners and riders across Alberta. Yet,
through it all, our passion for equines and the strength
of our community have remained unwavering.
Economically, the looming threat of U.S. tariffs
has raised concerns about cross-border competitions,
rising costs for feed, medications and equipment,
and the affordability of trucks and trailers. The
Alberta Equestrian Federation (AEF) is committed to
supporting you with timely, fact-checked information
to navigate these uncertainties.
Weather-related challenges, including wildfires,
floods and hailstorms have also tested our resilience.
In late April, we activated the AEF Equine Emergency
Disaster Fund Task Force to raise funds and establish
a centralized online hub for assistance, ensuring help
is accessible for those in need.
Amid these challenges, our equines — horses,
donkeys and mules — offer us solace and a path
to self-care. Whether you’re grooming in the barn,
working in the round pen, practicing patterns in the
arena or pausing on a trail to soak in a breathtaking
view and the melody of thrushes, these moments
ground us in the world we choose — a world built on
connection, passion and community.
Our vibrant equestrian community, with over
150,000 equines across Alberta, continues to thrive.
This year, we’ve seen renewed enthusiasm for
recreational activities, driven by our dedicated AEF
Recreation Task Force. We’re excited to introduce new
family and travel insurance options for members and
to unveil a refreshed Alberta Bits magazine, designed
to inspire and inform.
As you embrace the joys of summer, I encourage
you to stay safe, cherish your time with your equines,
and connect with fellow equestrians. If our paths
cross at an event or on a trail, please don’t hesitate to
say hello — I’d love to hear about your journey.
With gratitude and warm wishes,
Jason Edworthy
President, Alberta Equestrian Federation
