“The first year we had one show and it
had, I don’t know, maybe 20 people in it
over a few days and now we’re having four
shows a year all with 50 people — that’s
a full event,” says Martland, who noted
that WEALTA had 144 members in 2024,
while WECan’s membership grew to 503.
“We’re already on track to get more this

Born in southern Alberta, Martland
competes at the masters’ level at working
equitation shows and hopes to represent
Canada at the 2026 world championships
in Spain.
Along with other top riders from across
Canada, Martland will attend the WAWE
Qualifier in Armstrong, B.C., in June.
“I encourage people to come volunteer
(or spectate) at a show and just see what
it’s all about,” Martland says. “Once people
have seen it and done it, they’re hooked
usually, so it doesn’t take too much.”
