A WELL-ROUNDED SPORT
A new sport finds momentum in Alberta
By Laurence Heinen
K enton Miller has seen the growth
of working equitation in Alberta
first-hand.
A lifelong equestrian enthusiast, Miller
was the second person to join Working
Equitation Canada (WECan) when it started
in 2017.
“002 is my membership number,” says
Miller, who owns and operates Kaspian
Equestrian just north of Olds, where he has
hosted numerous events for the national
organization. “The first … recognized
working equitation show was here at
Kaspian Equestrian.”
The sport of working equitation began in
1996 in Italy, France and Spain, expanding
to Portugal a year later. It highlights the
collaboration between riders and their
working horses.
“If you think about it, it came from
countries that designed this discipline
around what they do with their horses,”
Kerry Marit
